I read The General’s Son, all 221 pages, in one day! I just couldn’t put it down. Even if I didn’t know the country well, Miko Peled writes in such a direct and engaging way that the pages practically turned by themselves. It’s a fascinating story with many twists and turns throughout, as his own family’s story intersects with history over and over. I was moved by the Peled family’s brave struggle to find the truth in the face of their own active Zionist past and their recent devastating loss of a child to a terrorist attack. We follow their evolution from war to peace, as they translate their sorrow into a search for justice. Having lived in Israel for almost twenty years, I appreciate their honesty and integrity, especially when so much is as stake. Its is a rare thing in Israel these days. But, in the tradition of King Solomon, Miko reminds us that the children that are being divided and killed belong to us all- and that if we love our children, the Israelis and Palestinians must learn to share. This book is a must read for anyone who has an opinion about what is going on, and for those who don’t. Since whether we realize it or not, what happens there effects us all. The unequal divide in Israel/Palestine is the epicenter of the quake of terrorism that is shaking the world. This fundamental injustice must be acknowledged if there is ever to be reconciliation. There is a way out of this mess, and it’s right under our noses. If democracy is good for the rest of us, then why not Israel?
